Unveiling Barriers: Why Women Face Challenges Climbing the Corporate Ladder

The representation of women in leadership roles is slowly improving, with statistics indicating that one in four C-suite executives is a woman, although only one in 20 is a woman of color. 

In terms of board representation, 28.2% of corporate board seats in Russell 3000 companies are held by women, with 30% of board seats in the biggest 1000 companies belonging to women. Interestingly, companies with female CEOs have a higher percentage of women on their boards, indicating a positive correlation between female leadership at the top and overall gender diversity in leadership positions​​. Globally, women hold 24% of CEO/MD positions, with significant regional variations. For instance, Africa leads with 68% female HR directors, and Latin America boasts the most female CEOs at 32%. Despite these challenges, there is a positive trend toward more female managers, with senior management roles held by women increasing from 29% to 31% in recent years. Furthermore, the majority of companies now have at least one woman in a leadership position, signaling a slow but steady move towards greater gender diversity in leadership roles​​. Gender bias, a hidden risk in many corporate cultures, often undermines women's achievements and leadership potential.
